Overview

You need to hear it to believe it.

Humanizing MR is our promise to change how patients feel, see and hear MR for the better. And when it comes to hearing, we had a lot to do. Typical MR scans can reach over 100 decibels. That’s roughly equivalent to the sound of a jackhammer, a speeding freight train or what you’d hear sitting in the front row of a rock concert. As you can imagine, this level of noise can add to patient anxiety. It can cause patients to stress about the source of the noise and interfere with patient and technologist communication.

To help make patients feel as comfortable as possible during a scan, we decided to change the way they hear MR forever. The result is Silent Scan, a revolutionary neuro acquisition technique that makes the sound of an MR scan as silent as a whisper. And better still, we’ve accomplished this while still providing the excellent image quality clinicians need to make a confident diagnosis.

Benefits

Hear the new sound of patient comfort.

Getting the best possible diagnostic image quality while making the scan experience as pleasant as possible for the patient is the primary goal of Silent Scan. But the advantages of a quieter scan room don’t stop there. Silent Scan can offer numerous benefits for all involved in the scanning process.

Patient benefits

  • Reduced anxiety during the scan due to quieter environment.
  • Quieter environment facilitates communication between patient and technologist.
  • Reduced scan times when the patient is relaxed and more apt to lie still.
  • Reduced incidence of rescans when the patient is relaxed and more apt to lie still.
  • A better overall MR experience. For patients requiring future scans, this can positively impact their outlook on their treatment plan.

Technologist benefits

  • Less focus on noise means more focus on the patient.
  • Reduced prep times and scan times can be achieved in the quieter environment.
  • Quieter environment facilitates communication between the patient. Less need to repeat instructions.
  • Quieter environment facilitates communication between multiple care team members such as nurses and anesthesiologists.

Physician benefits

  • Increased patient satisfaction due to a quieter, more pleasant experience.
  • Excellent image quality for accurate diagnosis.
  • Relaxed patients and quieter environment can lead to faster throughput with fewer rescans.

Facility benefits

  • Relaxed patients and quieter environment can lead to faster throughput with fewer rescans.
  • Elevated patient satisfaction due to a quieter, more pleasant experience.
  • Innovative technology can give facility competitive advantage.
  • Quieter MR scanning room has less impact on noise levels of neighboring rooms.

Technology

Breaking the silent technology barrier.

Historically, most attempts at reducing MR noise have focused on muffling or dampening the sound. Silent Scan uses a unique combination of three advanced technologies to eliminate the acoustic noise at the source, revolutionizing how MR images are acquired.

Silent Scan Advanced Technologies

Silenz
This is a novel data acquisition method where gradients are used continuously, but are not rapidly switched on or off. As a result, mechanical vibration is eliminated and no noise is generated during the acquisition. Silenz technology acquires three-dimensional MR data, yielding isotropic resolution. Silenz also has a very short echo time improving image quality and signal from all tissues of interest.

High Fidelity Power Electronics
This platform helps maintain the extremely stable gradients and radio frequency (RF) required to avoid generating image artifacts during reconstruction.

Ultra-fast RF Switching Capabilities
Since Silent Scan technology avoids switching gradients rapidly, it’s crucial that the RF coil system be capable of switching from transmit to receive mode within microseconds to maximize signal-to-noise ratios within the images. And the GEM Suite of coils is designed to do just that.
